About Mrs. Shirey
Mrs. Shirey is from rural Hancock County. She grew up on a farm with her cows, dog, cats, and family. She loved helping her dad outside as a child, and even baled and put away hay once in a while. As a farm girl, she learned many valuable lessons, including resourcefulness, initiative, having an imagination, and self-reliance.
As she grew up, Mrs. Shirey became extremely involved in school and extra-curricular activities, including basketball, volleyball, and softball. In high school, Mrs. Shirey played all three sports as well as was inducted in National Honor Society, was active on Student Council, held a class office for one year, participated in FCCLA, and was chapter reporter for FFA. Mrs. Shirey graduated in 2001 from Southeastern High School as valedictorian.
Upon entering into college at Culver-Stockton College, Mrs. Shirey majored in communications and English, with a minor in journalism. She earned an academic and athletic scholarship in both basketball and volleyball, competing in both sports inter-collegiately for four years. While at C-SC, she also joined Sigma Kappa, a national social sorority, was editor-in-chief of the Megaphone (the college's newspaper), KCSW (the student radio station), VOICES (a volunteer-based group), and FCA. Shirey graduated summa cum laude with honors in May of 2005.
Entering into the work world, Shirey began as a communication specialist at Adams/Pike Regional Office of Education #1 in August of 2005. While there, she maintained and developed websites, worked with coalitions and community-based projects, as well as a social norms campaign called "aRe yoU iN? - Think AGAIN." In Septermber of 2006, Shirey married her husband Ryan. After spending two years with the ROE, she decided to finish her master's coursework and completed her student teaching while still working with the ROE on newsletter articles and other journalistic-type stories.
Shirey completed her student-teaching at Quincy High School in 2007, just before Mira (their daughter) was born (January 2008), and she earned her Master's of Education in Secondary Education from Grand Canyon University - Phoenix, Arizona. They completed their family with Logan (their son, October 2010). They moved to Carthage in 2011, shortly after she accepted a position at Hamilton High School, and enjoyed the company of their dog Tippey, who passed away in November. This summer, the Shirey's adopted to American Bull Dane puppies, Bubba and Scout - they continue to grow.
Since then, Shirey has served as English Instructor at Payson-Seymour, Hamilton, and Illini West High Schools. While at those various schools, Shirey taught all levels of English, coached volleyball and basketball, served as Book Club Sponsor, class sponsor, and on various other committees as well.
Shirey is excited to begin the school year here at Unity High School and is looking forward to facilitating the learning of her students in English III as well as interacting with the students who are ready to move on into another phase of life - the Seniors. Recently, Shirey was hired as the Scholastic Bowl and WYSE Coach.
Good luck to all students at Unity High School this year.
